Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composites

Oxide ceramic matrix composites (CMC) are advanced high-performance materials typically consisting of oxide ceramic fibres embedded in a porous oxide ceramic matrix. Unlike traditional monolithic ceramics, oxide CMC show a non-brittle, damage-tolerant behaviour while keeping their excellent high temperature and corrosion resistant properties. This unique combination of properties makes them ideal materials for lightweight, high temperature application as alternatives and beyond the application potential of most metals.

FOX Composites focuses on the development and manufacturing of high-quality fibre reinforced oxide CMC materials and components. We offer a range of state-of-the-art oxide CMC materials for various application requirements.

Properties

  • High Temperature Stability

CMCs can withstand extreme temperatures up to 1300°C continuous operating temperature

  • Corrosion Resistance

Resistant to chemical corrosion, enhancing their durability in aggressive environments. No oxidation.

  • Lightweight

Over 60% lighter than steel and over 30% lighter than titanium

  • High Strength and Toughness

High mechanical strength, toughness and damage tolerance

  • Fire Proof

    Non-flammable & no smoke emission

  • Thermal Shock Resistance

    Excellent thermal shock resistance

  • Thermal Insulation

    Good thermal insulation characteristics

Oxide CMC offer numerous advantages over traditional materials such as metals and polymers:

  • Performance: Higher temperature resistance and strength.
  • Efficiency: Reduced weight leads to improved energy efficiency and performance.
  • Durability: Higher corrosion and wear resistance, extending the lifespan of components.

Technology

Slurry infusion

FOX COMPOSITES use fast and cost-efficient slurry infusion processes to manufacture high quality oxide CMC components. Developed at the German Aerospace Centers (DLR) Institute of Materials Research, we want to shape the future of oxide CMC production.

Fabrication technologies:

VASI (Vacuum Assisted Slurry Infusion)

Fast and cost-efficient, one- or two-sided mould vacuum-assisted infusion and drying process for the fabrication of high-quality prototypes, complex designs and small-scale series.

IFOX® (Infusion Fabricated Oxide CMC)

Automatable and scalable closed-mould vaccum- and pressure-assisted infusion and drying process for the large-scale fabrication of CMC materials and components with the highest requirements in quality and reproducibility.

With our technical expertise and our drive for continuous improvement and innovation, we want to contribute to take CMC materials from the lab and niche markets to the widespread, large-scale applications.
